THE CHALLENGE

Parekh and Singh’s album Science City was an album I drew a lot of inspiration from, with its futuristic and melancholic yet hopeful themes. With this album in mind, I wondered how can I make the auditory experience of an album a purely visual one?

THE SOLUTION

Using the album as a starting point, I created a storybook app prototype of the story of a particle going through its life. Each "page" of the story is an animation that represents one song off of the album, with the song title embedded into the text of the story.

This is the final demo of the Science City story!

The planning portion of the project started with brainstorming about how to transform this album into a visual experience. Looking at concept, color, type, and seeing what felt best to try.

Once I decided on the storybook app, I began storyboarding each page and then overlaying what animations would go with each page.

Each page has a custom background with hand-lettered type that I developed myself.

reflection

This project was my first experience with Figma. I think it was a clever way to begin experimenting, but I would love to make this experience more interactive. Having ways to physically move the particle through the journey, choose its path, even interact with another user in cooperative play could all be fun ways to build out this experiment.

This project was also my first time creating a body of work of this size, and I think some of the backgrounds work together more than others. If I were to revisit this piece, I would love to plan the motifs and visual themes that run through each background more to make it feel more cohesive.

I really enjoyed the lettering I did for this project, and I would love to work it into its own custom font.
